PET VACCINATIONS

Schedule Pet Vaccinations at Our Animal Hospital

resized_300x223_4616342Pet vaccinations are far too important to ignore, yet many owners can forget to make sure their pets receive that first rabies vaccination or other shots — or they assume that one rabies vaccination or distemper shot is sufficient. Here at Balboa Veterinary Hospital we urge pet owners to safeguard their pets from deadly preventable diseases. That means not only arranging for certain “core” vaccinations for your puppy or kitten, but also following up with annual booster shots. Some of the more commonly recommended pet vaccinations include:

Rabies – Rabies is a lethal neurological disease that attacks the brain. Although rare in the United States, it is a fatal zoonotic disease (transmittable from animals to humans).Your pet may at first seem unusually sullen or withdrawn, then become aggressive, foam at the mouth, and snap at humans and other animals. This aggressive stage is when the virus is mostly likely to spread through your pet’s bite. Since rabies can infect humans as well, a rabies vaccination is mandatory for your cat dog and recommended for your cat.

Distemper – Canine distemper causes flu-like symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, fatigue, fever and digestive upsets. It is particularly devastating to puppies, causing severe weakness and immune system suppression, which can then lead to other ailments that require treatment. Feline distemper, also known as panleukopenia or FPV, causes similar symptoms, in addition to anemia, a rough coat and neurological dysfunction.

Canine Hepatitis – This infectious liver disease also invades the lungs, spleen and kidneys. It causes fevers, swelling of the head or neck, and reduced blood clotting that can contribute to hemorrhaging. Puppies face the highest risk of dying from the illness, making early pet vaccinations a critical protective measure.

Parvo – This disease is caused by the parvovirus and primarily attacks the digestive system, though the vomiting and diarrhea that result may bear a close resemblance to a case of distemper. Damage to the intestines can cause shock, dehydration, and eventual blood toxicity. Even with attentive treatment from an animal hospital, 85 percent of infected dogs will die from the disease.

Calicivirus – This respiratory disorder stems from either feline calicivirus or feline herpesvirus. Cats with calicivirus suffer from breathing problems, runny nose, mouth ulcers and fevers; they may also limp or refuse to eat. Even after recovering from the illness, a cat carries the virus for life.

Our Balboa Veterinarian Keeps Your Pets Properly Immunized

Some shots, while not as critical as a distemper or rabies vaccination, may also provide much-needed protection. If your dog spends time in boarding facilities, for instance, you should vaccinate him against “kennel cough.” If you worry about tick-borne diseases such as Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, your pet can be vaccinated against these illnesses as well.

If you have questions about which vaccines your pet should have, or how often he needs to get booster shots, contact a veterinarian at Balboa Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Kyle Sorrells is committed to the protection, health and wellness of your pets.

Testimonials

Every time I'm in to pick up food or meds for my kitty boy I'm greated with a warm, smiling face. The staff is wonderful! If I happen to run into the doc he greats me with a smile too and always asks about my kitty. Always a pleasure when I'm here!

Excellent visit, as always. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. Juan Pablo is a fantastic vet--he makes the visits with my 3 dogs stress-free for them. I feel like he cares about my pets' health as much as I do as their "mom". Would recommend BVH in a heartbeat and I have done so in the past. Yea to BVH!!!!

I love that Dr. Romero was a doctor that explained everything. He really took the time to answer all my questions and made sure I understood all that goes into owning a terrier mix. My rescue was so comfortable with him, she even fell asleep in his arms while he was examining her!

You guys made room for us when our current vet said that they would charge a ridiculous fee. Thank you for seeing us and giving Ryder top notch service. The follow up calls truly made us life-time fans. When our plan ends at our current vet, we will be transferring to your business full time. Thank you for everything.
