PET SURGERY

Dog and Cat Surgery at Balboa Veterinary Hospital

resized_300x134_pet_surgeryThe veterinary team at our Balboa animal hospital in San Diego offers comprehensive small animal surgical care. From routine spay and neuter procedures to emergency operations, our highly skilled surgical team is fully experienced in dog and cat surgery. Our veterinarian recognizes that any procedure, no matter how routine, can be a stressful and challenging experience for pets and their owners. That’s why we go to great lengths to make pet surgery as safe as possible.

Orthopedic Pet Surgery, Spay/Neuter, ACL Repair and More

Prior to dog and cat surgery, our Balboa animal hospital veterinarians will use advanced diagnostics, including digital radiography, to precisely diagnose your pet’s health condition. In an emergency, our surgical team is prepared to act swiftly and safely to save your pet’s life. For example, if your pet is suffering from gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), then emergency surgery may be necessary to untwist your pet’s stomach. Other operations, such as orthopedic surgery, are elective procedures that help pets suffering from arthritis or joint pain.

If your pet will be under anesthesia during the operation, we will first conduct diagnostic blood work. This blood work gives us a snapshot of your pet’s internal health, including underlying health conditions that may interfere with our ability to safely administer anesthesia. In general, anesthesia is administered to immobilize pets and control pain. Our goal is to deliver the least amount of anesthesia necessary to safely perform the surgical procedure without inflicting injury or discomfort on your pet. Prior to pet surgery, food and water should be withheld 12 hours in advance. An empty stomach is preferable, as this reduces the risk for potential health complications should your pet suffer an allergic reaction to anesthesia.

The safety, comfort and well-being of your pet are our top priorities at all times. We will carefully monitor your pet’s vital signs during the operation. After the operation is complete, your pet will be placed in our post-operative care suite. We will monitor your pet as the anesthesia wears off and also check for signs of potential complications. Once we are confident in your pet’s safe recovery, we will release your pet to return home. For a routine operation such as spay and neuter, your pet may be released the same day. Following more advanced orthopedic procedures, we may need to supervise your pet overnight.

We send every pet home with detailed instructions for at-home recovery and pain medication. For example, following spay surgery, female pets will need to be kept inside the house for 5 to 7 days while their bodies heal. This can be a challenge for young puppies that may be eager to run around and play after a few days.

If you have questions about pet surgery or the recovery process, contact our Balboa animal hospital at any time. From diet restrictions and activity restrictions to pain management and medication dosage, our veterinarian is always available to address your concerns.

Testimonials

Every time I'm in to pick up food or meds for my kitty boy I'm greated with a warm, smiling face. The staff is wonderful! If I happen to run into the doc he greats me with a smile too and always asks about my kitty. Always a pleasure when I'm here!

Excellent visit, as always. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. Juan Pablo is a fantastic vet--he makes the visits with my 3 dogs stress-free for them. I feel like he cares about my pets' health as much as I do as their "mom". Would recommend BVH in a heartbeat and I have done so in the past. Yea to BVH!!!!

I love that Dr. Romero was a doctor that explained everything. He really took the time to answer all my questions and made sure I understood all that goes into owning a terrier mix. My rescue was so comfortable with him, she even fell asleep in his arms while he was examining her!

You guys made room for us when our current vet said that they would charge a ridiculous fee. Thank you for seeing us and giving Ryder top notch service. The follow up calls truly made us life-time fans. When our plan ends at our current vet, we will be transferring to your business full time. Thank you for everything.
